SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Springfield City Library announced the return of its community-wide reading initiative, “One Read, One Springfield,” after a more than 15-year hiatus.
The initiative aims to bring neighbors together through meaningful conversation and lifelong learning through a shared reading experience. The selected book for this year’s program is “Braiding Sweetgrass” by Robin Wall Kimmerer, a collection of essays exploring the relationship between people and the natural world through Indigenous wisdom, science, and storytelling.
Physical copies of “Braiding Sweetgrass” are available to borrow in English, Spanish, and a Young Readers Edition at every Springfield City Library branch. Digital copies are also available through Libby and Hoopla for patrons with a Springfield City Library card.
“One Read, One Springfield is about more than reading the same book,” said Chelsea Bell, supervisor of the East Forest Park Branch Library. “It’s about creating shared experiences, meaningful conversations, and stronger connections throughout our community. I’m thrilled to see this beloved program return and can’t wait to welcome readers together this fall.”
Adult readers in Springfield are encouraged to explore the important themes of the book through free library programming, discussions, and community events. Programs will be announced later this summer and will take place throughout the fall at library locations across the city.
“We’re excited to bring back a program that has the power to unite our community through stories,” said Maggie Keane, Program and Training Librarian. “Libraries have always been places where ideas are shared and connections are made, and One Read, One Springfield gives us an opportunity to extend those conversations beyond our walls and across the entire city.”
Residents are encouraged to pick up a copy at their favorite Springfield City Library location or borrow the digital edition to begin reading this summer. More information about One Read, One Springfield can be found at springfieldlibrary.org.
