Visit the restored Rotunda at the Springfield Central Library The Springfield Library's Rotunda was restored in 1998, providing an elegant welcoming space for users and visitors. Arches, columns, and marble work were restored to their original colors and finishes. A light chamber in the dome replicates the effect of natural light from the skylights that illuminated the grand hall when the building was first opened.
The dome, the State Street foyer, and the new Circulation Desk reflect the early twentieth century origins of the Library and our continuing mission to serve the needs of a diverse community in the spirit of Andrew Carnegie's vision of libraries as the "People's University". Funded in part with a matching grant from the Massachusetts Preservation Projects Fund through the Massachusetts Historical Commission. The Springfield Library building is on the National Register of Historic Places, the State Historic Register, and is part of a Historic District in the City of Springfield.
