"A Beginning Reader is Not a Beginning Thinker!" Why are there adults in our communities who can't read and write at the level they need to support their children's schooling, to get a good job, or to participate in their community? What can Springfield area adults in this situation do to achieve their reading goals? One answer is found at Read/Write/Now, the Springfield City Library's Adult Learning Center, located at the Pine Point Branch, 204 Boston Road, Springfield. Read/Write/Now is celebrating twenty years of helping adult learners meet their goals with an open house on Wednesday, May 21, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. The public is invited to this free event, and light refreshments will be served. During a brief program at 6 p.m., Read/Write/Now students will unveil and read from their new publication, "My Life So Far," a series of autobiographies. Dignitaries from the state Department of Education - Adult and Community Learning Services and the Western Massachusetts Governor's Office have been invited. Copies of the book will be available, as well as classroom tours and showings of a DVD created by the B-BALL (Becoming a Better Adult Learner and Leader) Team. Meet the dedicated volunteers, staff, and learners that make the program a success! Currently, over 80 Springfield area residents attend beginning, developing, and pre-GED classes every year, and there are usually one or two people on the waiting list for every available classroom seat. Hundreds more adults are counseled and referred every year to other area adult basic education opportunities. Success stories include former students who now serve on the program's advisory committee or who come back twice a week to tutor in math, learners who have obtained citizenship, GEDs, drivers licenses, and many more. Read/Write/Now helps adults living in the greater Springfield area to achieve their basic education goals as family members, workers and community members. We provide an adult basic education program at no cost to participants that promotes self-directed learning and recognizes and values the strengths and knowledge that adults bring to learning. Read/Write/Now, part of the Springfield City Library, is funded by the Massachusetts Department of Education - Adult and Community Learning Services as well as other public and private funds.
