Fizz! Boom! Read!
Summer Reading Club for Children
Prevent Summer Slide — Read!Download our Children’s Summer Programs booklet!
Research shows that kids who read daily over the summer maintain or increase their reading skills compared to the end of the school year.
Kids who don’t read over the summer lose two months of learning.
Want some help? The Springfield City Library offers an independent reading club to help keep your kids reading. Even babies can participate!
Step 1: Come into any Springfield City Library location and pick up a tracking sheet in the Children’s area.
Step 2: Read to your pre-readers, or help your readers keep track of their reading time. Here’s how:
- Pre-readers: Babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergarteners: Every time you read a book to your pre-reader, ask him or her to color a bubble on the tracking sheet. (You can put a check mark on your baby’s sheet.) Pre-readers can complete up to eight sheets.
- Readers: Color one bubble for any day during which you read for at least twenty minutes. One bubble represents one day, even if you read for an entire hour. It takes readers seven days to complete a tracking sheet.
Step 3: Return your completed tracking sheet to any Springfield Library location and choose your free book prize.
Step 4: Take another tracking sheet and do it again!
Don’t let your kids fall behind! Encourage them to read this summer!
The Springfield City Libraries are also offering lots of fun activities for your kids to participate in this summer, including weekly scavenger hunts or craft activities at all branch locations. Check out our programming calendar for more information.
