Did you know…that the most critical period of vocabulary development occurs between birth and age 3? Everyone knows that the children who start Kindergarten with the largest vocabularies have the easiest time learning to read and stay in school the longest, but not everyone knows that most of the foundation for success is laid BEFORE the age of 3. Bringing your child to storytime is more than just fun–it’s brain building!

2015 Summer Reading Club

Check our brochure of children’s programs here for lots of fun activities happening all summer long at the library!

Infants, Toddlers, and Pre-readers Pick up a tracking sheet from any Springfield City Library location. Every time you read your child a book, mark off one of the sections on the tracking sheet. After you have read ten books together, return the sheet to any Springfield City Library location and choose a prize book! Yes, we even have board books especially for babies and toddlers!

Readers in grades K-5 Pick up a tracking sheet from any Springfield City Library location. There are seven different sections on the tracking sheet. Start with any section and complete the sections in any order. On five of the days you will read for at least 20 minutes. On the other two days you might read for at least 20 minutes, OR you might: attend a library program, draw or write something about one of the books you read during that week, visit a museum during that week, or answer a Hero’s Quiz card (pick one up at the library). Once you have completed your tracking sheet, return it to any Springfield City Library location and choose your prize book. You may earn one prize per seven day period. Children who complete at least one tracking sheet will receive in invitation to our Roller Skating Party to be held on Monday, July 20 from 6-8 p.m. at Interskate 91, 2043 Wilbraham Road in Wilbraham. Children who complete at least two tracking sheets may enter the statewide Boston Bruins raffle. Children who complete at least three tracking sheets receive an invitation to attend the library Celebration at the Forest Park Zoo on Saturday, August 15 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Children who complete at least four tracking sheets will be entered into a branch-specific raffle to win a pair of Big E tickets. The Big E runs from September 18 – October 4 this year.
