All applications can be launched from the desktop or from keystroke shortcuts. Applications should be configured so that you need not worry about application conflicts. However, should the computer lock up, please contact the Information Technology at ext. 286/473 for assistance.
JAWS will provide an auditory description of what is visibly displayed on the screen. JAWS is controlled by the numeric keypad. The NUMLOCK must be toggled off to control JAWS. The ZERO key on the keypad is the insert key used in the following commands.

ZoomText is magnification software. It allows the user to magnify the screen through a range of levels from 1X to 16X. In its simplest form, the user needs to know how to increase and decrease magnification and how to activate and deactivate ZoomText on the fly. There are many advanced features to Zoomtext that some patrons may be interested in.

PwWebspeak is a dedicated talking web browser. Webspeak provides information about the landscape of a website. For example, webspeak can tell you where in a page you are, how many links are on the page, and can give you a page summary.

Duxbury Braille Translator is software that can convert print material to Braille. You will use Duxbury to send material to the Romeo Brailler for embossing. Duxbury can perform many complex conversions involving Braille formatting, including conversion to Computer Braille, Nemeth Braille, and Grades 1 and 2 Braille. Brailling for professional purposes is not a service you should offer, however, converting short documents such as library fliers, memos, and short documents for immediate review by a Braille reader is a relatively easy task.
Steps to emboss a document:
Kurzweil 1000 is software that will enable you to scan print material into the computer. The scanned material is then read to the user. A software synthesizer produces speech through the computer's sound card. The simplest use of Kurzweil involves positioning the material to be scanned onto the scanner, scanning the material into Kurzweil, and having Kurzweil read the document to the user.

Key 2: Erase Text. Press once to erase the current page. Press twice to erase all pages.

Key 1: Volume Up. Increase speech volume.
Key 2: Speed Up. Increase reading speed.
Key 3: Reading Mode. Choose unit of line, sentence, or paragraph.
Key 4 (rectangular, vertical): Start or Stop Scanning. Start a scan or cancel a scan in progress.

Key 1: Volume Down. Decrease speech volume.

Key 3: Multiple Column. Choose single or multi-column recognition.
