Forest Park neighborhood residents outgrew the provisional circulating library that was set up at Park Memorial Baptist Church and residents wanted a full service branch library. In 1908, industrialist Andrew Carnegie provided $50,000 for three branch libraries that included Forest Park Branch Library. Carnegie required that neighborhood citizens subscribe for land to match his donation of money for the building. Over 500 prominent Forest Park citizens subscribed for land and soon Forest Park Branch Library was completed in 1909.

The Forest Park Branch is now wireless.

Piano and cello performance at Forest Park Branch Library
Saturday, November 22, 1 pm

Take a musical break from your holiday preparations to attend an educational, enchanting, free classical music concert at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 22. Two teachers from the Community Music School of Springfield will play a wide variety of classical music at the Forest Park Branch Library, 380 Belmont Avenue, Springfield. Sofya Shainskaya, a pianist with a distinguished career as a performer and instructor for over 30 years, was at one time the accompanist and musical arranger for the former USSR Olympic Gymnastic Team. Sofya's husband, Boris Kogan, a cellist, was a child prodigy in his native Russia. He was Assistant Principal cellist with the Leningrad Symphony and has performed in locations such as Yale University, Carnegie Hall, and Washington, D.C. As well as playing beautiful musical selections by J.S. Bach, Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, Sofya and Boris will talk about the composers, and their own experiences as musicians in the United States and in Russia.

This concert is presented through the generosity of the Muriel Schwartz Fund, The Friends of the Springfield City Library, Inc., and the Forest Park Branch Library Russian Book Club. For additional information contact the Forest Park Branch Library at 263-6843.
