Family Adventures in Reading (FAIR) will be offered at the Central Library Community Room, 220 State Street, on Saturdays at 2:00 p.m. from October 11 to November 15, 2008. Professional storytellers will lead families and children 6 and older in discussions about children's stories on topics such as fairness, courage, and dreams. Activities for younger children and healthy snacks will be provided.
Families who attend regularly will receive a canvas book back and free book. Register now for this free program by calling or visiting the Central Library's Children's Room at 263-6828, ext. 201.
Books to be read will include classics like Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak and Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears by Verna Aardema, in addition to other superbly written and illustrated titles. They include many works by distinguished African-American and Latino writers and artists, including Lulu Delacre and Tomás Rivera.
FAIR is a humanities-based family reading program that introduces families to the pleasures of reading and learning together, encourages parents and children to think critically and discuss moral issues, and helps parents and children learn how to choose books and become active library users.
FAIR is presented collaboratively by Mass Humanities and the Springfield City Library. Mass Humanities is an independent nonprofit affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities that uses history, literature, philosophy, and other humanities disciplines to enhance and improve life throughout the Commonwealth.
