The Liberty Branch Library was built in 1930 to serve the new Liberty Heights suburb of Irish and French Canadian immigrants who were settling this part of the city as the Street Car lines were extended out Carew Street. Skilled workers and their families immediately made this library a popular and much appreciated part of the community. 1800 books were checked out the first day the Library was opened. Designed by architect Max Westoff in the Colonial Revival style with a Southern Flair in the use of the double chimneys on either end, this truly is an Architectural gem. W. W. Davis Construction built the Library for $35,000. They also constructed the Glenwood and Liberty schools.

LETTERBOXING AT THE LIBERTY BRANCH LIBRARY
May 1 - September 30, 2010

rubber stampsAn intriguing mix of treasure hunting, art, navigation, and exploring interesting places, letterboxing is a hobby just coming to national attention. Letterboxers hide small boxes containing a logbook and rubber stamp, and distribute clues to finding the box. Finders make an imprint of the letterbox's stamp on their personal logbook, and leave an impression of their personal stamp on the letterbox's logbook to show they have found the box. At the Liberty Branch Library we've created a special kind of letterbox for kids or families to find!

In order to access our letterbox, hunters must answer a series of quiz questions by looking around the branch building or using library resources. When the hunter correctly completes the quiz, one of our librarians will produce the letterbox for stamping. Running from May 1 to the end of September, it will be great fun for the whole family. Stop in and try it! For more information please call the Liberty Branch Library, 773 Liberty Street, at 263-6849.
