"The Place Promised in Our Early Days is a character-driven dramatic anime film, directed by Makoto Shinkai (director of Voices of a Distant Star). The animation in the film is lush and very realistic-looking. The music perfectly evokes the mood being portrayed in the film. The story, animation, and music all come together to make The Place Promised in Our Early Days a very touching and moving coming-of-age story. I highly recommend this film to fans of character-driven anime drama." Lesley Aeschliman, BellaOnline's Anime Editor

Popular rapper Common promotes reading through his monthly book selections and online book discussion site for teens. We'll be reading three of Common's choices and sharing our thoughts about the books. Participants can log on to the Corner Book Club and participate in reader forums and author chats. Books include The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie; Pemba's Song: A Ghost Story by Tonya Hegamin and Marilyn Nelson; and Street Love by Walter Dean Myers. Interested teens can find out what the club is all about and get a copy of the first book, Pemba's Song, on July 2 at 1 p.m. in the Central Library Community Room, 220 State Street, Springfield. Bring your library card, and if you don't have one yet, we'll help you get signed up! Common's Corner Book Club, appropriate for teens 12-18, will meet from 1-2 p.m. on July 2, July 16, July 30, and August 13. Snacks will be served at all meetings. To register please call 263-6828, x425, stop by any reference desk at the Central Library, or register online. The Friends of the Library, Inc. have generously provided funding for this program. "The Common Ground Foundation is dedicated to the empowerment and development of urban youth in the United States. The Common Ground Foundation was created by Hip Hop artist, actor and children's book author Lonnie Rashid Lynn, known as "Common." Common's social-conscience message serves as inspiration for equality, opportunity and hope among youth in undeserved communities. The Foundation is committed to empowering youth in urban neighborhoods and providing life skills needed to achieve their dreams."
Reach for the Stars -- Read! is sponsored by the Friends of the Springfield Library, Massachusetts Regional Library Systems, and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, with funding from the Institute of Museums and Library Services, an independent federal agency that grows and sustains a Nation of Learners because lifelong learning is critical to success.
